Aqueous sodium methioninate solutions which have a low sodium carbonate content can be obtained from the crude hydrolysis mixtures which are formed when 5-(ss-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin is hydrolysed with 1.1 to 6 equivalents of sodium hydroxide and/or sodium carbonate, by bringing the hydrolysis mixture to a sodium methioninate content of between 10 and 65% by weight, preferably between 15 and 40% by weight, treating the mixture with 0.15 to 6 times its volume, preferably 0.25 to 4 times its volume, of methanol or ethanol, removing the sodium carbonate which has precipitated and concentrating the filtrate until the sodium methioninate content is 40 to 65% by weight. |
