PURPOSE:To prepare an ether at low cost, in high yield, by the hydrogenative decomposition of the corresponding acetal or ketal in the presence of a catalyst containing ruthenium and iodine. CONSTITUTION:An ether is prepared by the hydrogenative decomposition of the corresponding acetal (e.g. formaldehyde dimethylacetal) or ketal (e.g. acetone dimethylketal) in the presence of a catalyst containing ruthenium and iodine. The ruthenium is e.g. metallic ruthenium, ruthenium chloride, dodecacarbonyl triruthenium, etc. and its amount is 10-0.01wt% of the raw material. The iodine is e.g. elemental iodine, hydrogen iodide, sodium iodide, etc., and the ratio of iodine to ruthenium is 10-0.1 in gram-atom. The hydrogen gas used in the process may be a crude gas containing inert gas or synthetic gas not to mention a high purity hydrogen gas. |
