PURPOSE:To enhance the display contrast and to make a polarizing plate unnecessary by forming multiple layers of a polychromatic nematic liq. crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy contg. a chiral substance while interposing a transparent electrode plate having prescribed electrodes at both sides between the layers. CONSTITUTION:Spacers 5', 5'' are attached to both sides of a transparent electrode plate 1' having prescribed transparent electrodes 2 and vertically orienting films 3 at both sides, and transparent electrode plates 1 each having a prescribed transparent electrode 2 and a vertically orienting film 3 at one side are arranged at both sides of the plate 1' with the spacers 5', 5'' in-between to form a cell. A polychromatic nematic liq. crystal 4', 4'' with negative dielectric anisotropy contg. a chiral substance is injected into the cell to obtain a liq. crystal display element using the phenomenon of the transition of the liq. crystal from a homeotropic phase to a cholesteric phase caused by applying a voltage. |
