The mechanism is intended for lifting and gathering sugar beet, etc. as it is moved (P1, by tractor 1) across the field. It comprises at least one lifting share (8) and at least one pair of parallel discs (6) rotated (P2, via 5) on a transverse horizontal shaft (4) between which discs flexible elements (7) are arranged to move the lifted beet along a guide track (10,11) extending circumferentially around part of the discs towards a gathering conveyor (12,13). The elements (7) may be tensioned springs arranged between the peripheral areas of the discs whose distance may be variable. The springs may be contained in axially slidable and rotatable flexible sleeves with outward radial prongs.
