Pipe handling system with apron and stacking arms - transfers pipe between pipe rack and pipe handling apparatus

A system is for transferring lengths of pipe laterally between a pipe rack and pipe handling apparatus, and consists of two spaced apart arms to one side of the pipe handling appts., next to the rack. Each arm has one end pivotally connected to a support (29) so that its opposite end may move up and down. The arms are in line for pivotal movement about parallel axes. A trough capable of supporting a length of pipe is pivotally coupled to the arms at their opposite ends. Tilting mechanisms are provided for tilting the trough laterally in opposite directions. The apparatus can be used under varying weather conditions on offshore units with tubulars of various diameters. It has an automatic pipe feeder and can readily be moved to different locations. Also, pipe can be transferred from racks on one side of the apparatus to the other side without necessitating the use of additional equipment. Further, handling does not damage the pin ends which do not require protective caps.
