PREPARATION OF HYDROGENATION CATALYST FOR PREPARING ETHYLENE GLYCOL

PURPOSE:To obtain the hydrogenation catalyst with high activity containing no chromium by a method wherein a copper ion containing aqueous solution is added to an alkali metal hydroxide aqueous solution and the obtained mixed solution is subjected to reduction treatment. CONSTITUTION:As the hydrogenation catalyst for preparing ethylene glycol by hydrogenating oxalic diester, one prepared by a method wherein cupric nitrate is added to an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide such as sodium hydroxide or the like to precipitate a copper oxide based precipitate, and this precipitate is subjected to reduction treatment is used. The resulting hydrogenation catalyst contains no chromium and generates reaction with good efficiency.
