In a process of vulcanizing butyl rubber using a substituted phenol resin (such as p-octylphenol/formaldehyde resin) accelerated by a metal halide, the butyl rubber is mixed with a metal halide (e.g. SnCl2) or with a metal salt or oxide plus a halogen containing substance which act as precursors for metal halide, and the mixture is aged at a temperature of 120 DEG C. or above before mixing with the phenol resin and vulcanizing. The ageing may be effected by storage or by roller milling. The metal salt or oxide may be zinc or iron oxide, stearate or formate, and the halogen containing substance may be polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate with/without maleic anhydride, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, chloroprene polymer, chlorinated paraffin or halogen containing butyl rubber. Carbon black and stearic acid may be used in the vulcanization mixes. Applications specified are hoses and tyres. Specifications 727,717 and 733,134 are referred to. |
