<p>The machine is powered by an electric motor which drives a threaded shaft having a tapered wedge at its lower end downwards into the end of the log, causing it to split into four. The splitting machine is mounted on a pedestal. The electric drive motor is mounted on the pedestal and is chain and sprocket coupled to a horizontal sorocket running in a horizontal housing. The sprocket has a central threaded hole through which passes the threaded splitter shaft, constrained such that it cannot rotate but is free to move vertically. Rotation of the sprocket moves the splitter up or down, and microswitches limit its travel and actuate contactors to reverse the rotation of the drive motor as each extremity is reached.</p> |
