In a combustion device, a swirl nozzle and a metering pump are connected to one another in such a way that as little dead space as possible exists between the delivery space of the metering pump and the swirl chamber of the nozzle. This makes it possible to atomise fuel through a swirl nozzle using a metering pump. Because it is possible for the metering pump to deliver for a period of just 2 ms for each pulse, at a frequency of 3 Hz, the delivery rate from the swirl nozzle can be reduced from the nominal value of 3 l/h to about 0.25 l/h. The atomised quantity of fuel is ignited by an ignition spark in a manner similar to that in a high-pressure atomiser system. Hence combustion is a combination of pressure atomisation and wall evaporation but is initiated by high-voltage sparks.
