The device, used for bringing the stable roof (1) of a motor vehicle, separated from the lower portion of the vehicle, into a closed rear trunk (4), consists of a rear cover (3') pivoting upwardly about a horizontal axis located at the rear of the vehicle, of two guiding rails (5) for the roof extending from the rear end of the roof up to the trunk and a curved slide shaped as an arc for each driving cable (flexible shaft) (11) sliding therein. At the front end of the respective arcs, the slides form a closed, elongated and narrow loop, the arcs and the loops being separated by a drive gearing wheel of the cable located in a closed casing. Cables are preferably steel cables on which a steel wire helix having a given pitch is hooked by adherence. The driving wheels are in mesh with this helix. The slides consist of rigid tubes presenting a slot on the upper portion or on the side. Through those slots and by appropriate means, the cables are connected, by their rear end, at the rear portion of the roof, and by their front end, to levers for actuating the cover. The roof is secured in both its extreme positions by means of locking devices. The displacement of the roof is possible when the vehicle is stopped or when it runs at low speed.
