Title compds. (I; R1 = H, benzyl, benzoyl, C1-5 alkanoyl; R4 = H, C1-6 alkyl; R5 = H, methyl, ethyl; R6 = H, carbobenzyloxy, formyl, C2-5 alkanoyl, C1-6 alkyl; Z = C1-9 alkylene; W = H, methyl, pyridyl, piperidyl), useful as analgesics, were prepd. by the reraction of II and metal hydride. Thus, 1.10 g 3-[(3,5-dimethoxy-N-ethoxycarbonyl)anilino -propionic acid and 4 g polyphosphoric acid were reacted at 65≦̸C for 45 min in N2 gas to give 645 mg 1-carbethoxy-5,7-dimethoxy-4-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline.
