Title compds. (I; X = Cl, H; R = substituted hydrocarbon group), having antiprotozoal and antitumor activities, were prepd. by introducing OH into the 20 position of a maytansinoid compd. (II) employing a member of the genus streptomyces. Thus, streptomyces pratensis was cultivated in a nutrient medium at 28≦̸C for 24 hr. The cultivated liq. 5l and maytansinol-3-isopropyl carbonate 20 mg were reacted at 28≦̸C for 48 hr to give demethyl maytansinol-3-isopropyl carbonate.
