A two-speed vehicle axle has a shift lever extending through its casing and joined by a torsion spring to a biasing lever 1 pivoted to the connecting rod 3 of a piston 5, a strong spring 11 biasing the piston to one of its two extreme positions, corresponding to establishment of one or other ratio in the axle. On the admission of pressure fluid, e.g. compressed air from the vehicle brake system, through a port 7, the piston 5 is forced downwards against the bias of the spring 11 to twist the torsion spring; when torque loading on the axle is later reduced, the torsion spring effects the desired ratio shift. When the port 7 is vented to exhaust, the strong spring 11 twists the torsion spring in the opposite direction preparatory to re-establishment of the other ratio, again effected when torque loading on the axle is reduced. The spring 11 engages a thimble 9 surrounding and bearing against the connecting rod 3, in turn engaging at its end with a nylon &c. wear pad 16. The other end of the spring 11 lies in a connector retained in a surrounding housing 6 by a spring circlip 14, removal of which allows dismantlement of the piston &c. assembly.</p> |
