PURPOSE:To sharply reduce the load on a writer and to improve the handling of a device by finding out proposed characters in each sectional unit in according with the features of strokes included in a specified segmental unit and positional relation between respective strokes and selecting characters from the relation of the proposed characters in respective segmental units to form a character string. CONSTITUTION:A character is recognized from the shapes of one or plural strokes included in a segmental unit and positional features among plural strokes in each character segment estimated from a character string whose segments are uncertain and proposed characters are found out. A character string having continuous proposed characters in continuous segmental units and minimum combination in the number of character out of the combination of these proposed characters is found out as a recognized result. Since a proposed character including many strokes is selected with priority from the proposed characters correctly found out in each character segmental unit to form a character string, a character string whose character segment are uncertain can be rapidly recognized.
