PURPOSE:To obtain a device whose circuits and control are simplified while the best operation characteristics are set through simple operation without any need to rewind a magnetic tape, by providing specific setting means for the best operation characteristics and operation switching means. CONSTITUTION:A test signal is recorded and then reproduced, and on the basis of the state of the reproduced signal, the best operation characteristics of recording, reproduction or recording and reproduction which correspond to the magnetic characteristics of a magnetic tape to be used are set automatically. The optimum operation characteristics setting device of a magnetic recorder and reproducer is provided with setting means 20-22, 30, 40, 60, 80, 92b, and 92c for the best operation characteristics which are started by a recording start command to set the best operation characteristics automatically, and operation switching means 20-22 which start recording operation without rewinding the magnetic tape when said setting means finish operation. The operation switching means include, for example, an erasing head 55 for test-signal erasure which is put in operation during the operation of said setting means. |
