PURPOSE:To set a recording bias, a recording level, and the best operation characteristics of a recording equalizer, etc., in a short time, by providing specific reference operation characteristics setting means, a test signal source, a deviation detecting means, and an operation characteristics correcting means. CONSTITUTION:Reference operation characteristics setting means 20-22, 40, 60, and 92 set reference operation characteristics which correspond to the kind of a magnetic tape, and a test signal source 30 outputs a test signal; and a deviation detecting means 80 detects the deviation in signal level between test signals reproduced at different frequencies, the deviation between the signal level of the test signal reproduced at a prescribed frequency and a reference signal level, or the combination of those deviations. On the basis of the relations between the detected deviation and reference operation characteristics, and the previously stored deviation and the best operation characteristics, operation characteristics correcting means 20-22, 40, and 60 make corrections so that the reference operation characteristics are coincident with the best operation characteristics. |
