Polymers of formula (I) are claimed in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 (same or different) are opt. substd. hydrocarbon gps. with up to 20C, or R1 and R2 and/or R3 and R4 together may complete a N-contg. heterocyclic gp. which may also contain O or S heteroatoms; A1 and A2 (same or different) are opt. branched alkylene gps. or opt. substd. arylene gps. with up to 20C; X is -SO2- or -CO-; R5 and R6 are H or low alkyl if X is -SO2-, and R5 and R6 together represent a gp. -CH(R7)-O-CH(R8)- if X is -CO-; R7 and R8 are H or lower alkyl; A3 is opt. satd. opt. substd. (cyclo)alkylene with 2-20C, which is opt. interrupted by a heteroatom or gp. such as -O-, -S-, -SO-, -SO2-, -S-S- or -N(R9)-, or by one or more arylene or cycloalkylene gps., and R9 is H, 1-12C alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl which may be substd; or A3 is a polyoxyalkylene gp. or a gp. -B1-D-B2- in which B1 and B2 are 1-12C alkylene or opt. substd. arylene and D is -N(R10)-(CO-D1-)y-CO-N(R11)-, -N(R5)-SO2-N(R6)-, -CONH-, -CO-O-, -O-CONH-, -CO-D2-CO- or -O-CO-D3-CO-O-; D1 is alkylene which is opt. interrupted by -S-S-, alkenylene, arylene, diamino-alkylene, diamino-arylene, dioxy-alkylene, polyoxy-alkylene or dioxy-arylene, or Di may be a direct covalent bond; y is 0 or 1; R10 and R11 are H or low alkyl; or if y is 0, R10 and R11 may each be a gp. -CH(R7)-O-CH(R8)-; D2 is diamino-alkylene, dioxy-alkylene, polyoxy-alkylene or dithio-alkylene; D3 is alkylene or arylene which is opt. substd. or esp. a diamino-alkylene, diamino-cycloalkylene or diamino-arylene; or A3, together with the two N atoms to which it is bound and with the pairs R1, R3 and/or R2, R4 forms a 4-6C cyclic or polycyclic gp; and Z(-) is an anion. The prods. are useful as aids in the processing of natural or synthetic textiles, as antimicrobial agents, as dispersing agents, emulsifying agents and flocculating agents.
