The automatic ash-tray includes a container (1) forming the base of the ash tray, with a pivoted cover (4) closing the top of the tray. A spring (6) holds the cover up in the closed position, the cover pivoting about a horizontal axis (5). On top of the ash tray there is a number of curved supports (9) to receive lighted cigarettes. Beneath each support there is a bimetal strip (10) with one end rigidly held underneath the support. The free end of the bimetal strip presses a projecting point (12) of the pivoted cover. When a cigarette rests on the support for a considerable length of time, the heat which it gives out warms the bimetal strip causing it to bend. This then pushes the cover open to receive the cigarette ash, preventing the smoke from it spreading out into the room. Alternatively, a thermistor or air opacity defecting cell may be used instead of the bimetal strip.
|
