The mortar grenade is made in a conventional fashion, i.e. outer casing, base section with attached stem and tail fin. A time fuse screwed into the nose of the grenade has a flame outlet directed towards an operating charge. Following this charge is a transfer igniter with a built in delay, consisting of a plastic or metal tube filled with a pyrotechnic charge. The smoke sections filled with a smoke producing material, surround this internal tube. Radiation reflecting and/or emitting material fills the space between the outer casing and the inner smoke sections. When the grenade is fired, the operating charge is ignited by the time fuse, the fixing pins in the base, shear off, and the casing and nose separate from the interior contents. The charge in the central tube ignites and bursts, dispersing the smoke sections and 'chaff' charge.
