This apparatus is used for the continuous casting of metal, including steel, along a curved path. In order to avoid the presence of fixed guide means for the starter bar and the cast bar during the casting operation in the region below the mould and adjoining the spray-cooling chamber and in order nevertheless to allow the use of a flexible or articulated starter bar, suitable mobile guide means for the starter bar are provided in the said region below the mould. During the casting operation, these means can assume a rest position, in which they cannot be reached by splashes of molten metal which can splash out there in the event of a rupture of the skin of the metallic cast bar. During the introduction or the removal of the starter bar, however, the mobile guide means are moved into a first operative position, in which they interact at least with the outer side of the curvature of the starter bar and guide the latter to the outlet of the mould, and they are then movable into a second operative position, in which they interact with the inner side of the curvature of the starter bar in order to prevent it being stretched along a chord of the curved path during its removal. <IMAGE>
