A reeling device including a reel (2) for holding, paying out and winding in a linearly extendable, flexible member, a spring (85) for biasing said reel in a recoil direction (40) of rotation for winding in said member and a latching mechanism including a pawl (31) locatable in a recess (27) in a latch (26) to prevent recoil in the recoil direction (40) and ramp surfaces (22) to put the pawl (31) in a condition to engage the latch (26) and projections (37) to put the pawl (31) out of a condition to engage the latch (26); wherein during paying out in the opposite direction (41) the pawl (31) is sequentially and repetitively put into and out of condition to engage the latch (26). |
