A plastics lid for a plastics container has a downwardly projecting annular rib (2) for engaging into the mouth of the container and a portion (3) extending beyond this rib and curved down over the rim of the container to form an annular groove in which an elastic sealing ring is seated, the downward projecting portion of the lid outside the rim of the container has a series of pref. uniformly distributed recesses or cut-outs (4). Around this outer, downward projecting portion of the lid there is a continuous circumferential rib (5) lying in the general horizontal plane perpendicular to the axis of the vessel and pref. forming the upper boundary of the cut-outs. Pref. there may be an additional downward projecting rib (7) inside the one which fits into the mouth of the container. Arrangement is designed to ensure that if the container tilts over and the edge of the lid strikes the ground, the lid itself is not deformed and consequently the mouth of the container is not deformed.
