Fuel injection system with at least one fuel injection valve of a type which injects the fuel when the fuel pressure suffices to lift its valve element from the associated valve seat against the force of a loading spring. The fuel injection valve has a hydraulic actuating element on which a hydraulic pressure bears in order to apply a force to the valve element. The force corresponds to the level of the hydraulic pressure, which is controlled according to the engine operating conditions in order to vary the opening pressure of the fuel injection valve.
