The automotive engine transmission mechanism incorporates a clutch between the flywheel and gearbox, while the engine is automatically uncoupled from the flywheel on the overrun and is coupled again when overrunning ceases, for max. fuel economy. The flywheel (4) is coupled to the crankshaft (3) by a freewheel unit (6) with a locking device (7), while the clutch (8) disengages automatically when the flywheel is running free. The freewheel can be arranged to lock automatically when the engine is driving the vehicle, and to release automatically on the overrun.
