The rotary tool (1) is intended for fine grinding the surface of a lacquer coat applied to a vehicle body to flatten this (i.e. remove the wave pattern.) It comprises a drive hub (2) carrying a number of radial grinding elements (3) which come into contact with the surface whilst the tool moves relatively. The elements consist of relatively stiff leaf-shaped members of equal radial length which may carry abrasive on both faces and may consist of linen or emery paper. Each element may rest on a resilient support (4) of shorter radial length.
