<p>A filter plate for use in the filtration and degassing of molten metal having an open cell structure comprising a plurality of interconnected voids surrounded by a web of ceramic or carbon has a plurality of additional through passages formed therein for gas flow in one direction while molten metal flows through the voids in the opposite direction. In a metal degassing and filtration method wherein two spaced apart cellular filter plates 26, 32 are provided in series in a filter chamber 14 with a fluxing gas inlet 38 provided therebetween, the first filter plate 26 is provided with the additional passageways 50 constituting a preferential path for the fluxing gas, whilst the second filter plate 32 has no additional passageways. <IMAGE></p> |
