<p>In a solar collector consisting of (a) an absorbing plate with at least one flow channel which has an inlet and an outlet for a heat transfer fluid, and (b) a housing in which the plate is mounted, the plate is coated on both sides with a selectively absorbing layer, the housing is of transparent material at least locally on both sides, and the housing is filled, at below atmos. pressure, with a gas with coefft. or heat conductivity of not more than 0.015 W/m.deg.C. The solar collector is a double-sided plate, which can be installed vertically and subjected to 50-80% more illumination, both in diffuse light and in direct radiation, than a single-sided collector.
