The water cistern which can fill to at least two different levels contains an arm (32) made up of two jointed parts. One (36) of these carries the float (40) and the other (34) operates the actuator (38) of the water inlet valve (20). An adjusting device (46) can move between at least two positions and carries e.g. a cam (62) which bears onto a surface (44) extending from the part of the arm connected to the float (40) in one extreme position and onto the arm (32) itself in the other extreme position.
