The particle accelerator, has a high tension principal electrode (EP) spaced from a symmetrical body (T) around the electrode and forming a reference potential. A discrete auxiliary electrode structure (DA,DB,DL) is formed by ring electrodes (DA) and bar electrodes (DB,DL) mounted about the principal electrode and acting to alter the lines of electric field to render them, at least in part, parallel. This reduces the spacing between the principal electrode and the body. An axial stack of secondary electrodes (S1,etc.), comprising equipotential rings or plates interconnected by resistances to form a potential divider, is provided between the principal electrode and reference potential.
|
