The keratome comprises body and holder and has a variable cutting edge depth to suit variations in the thickness of the cornea during the cut. The holder can in both directions move along the axis (1) of a drive incorporating a micrometer screw (5). On the blade side (9) it is abutted by a blade height limiter (4) which limits the penetration of the cutting edge into the cornea. The holder consists of a clamp attached to one end of the rod (10) and fitted at the far end with a stem which is axially sprung in relation to the main body and cooperates with the micrometer screw (5). There is a pin (12) to prevent the rod twisting round the body, the pin engaging a slot (11) provided in the rod for this purpose.
