The ends of the cables are stripped back to the conductor strands which are jointed by soldering or a similar technique. The base conductor is covered by a two-piece aluminium or copper cylinder having an outer dia. slightly larger than that of the cable insulation. A preformed sleeve is then wrapped over the cylinder, overlapping onto the cable insulation. The sleeve is mfd. from a carbon impregnated silicone or rubber material which is electrically conductive. Silicone insulators taper away from the joint providing end sealing, and field deflecting end caps are installed over the ends of the tapered insulators. A polymer material is moulded around the space over the joint between the end insulators. The cable jointing procedure provides a reliable joint for high and extra high tension power cables. The insulation of the joint uses dry insulating materials for greater reliability at high and extra high voltages.
