Gland type stuffing box seal - has lantern ring with inclined radial bores to admit anti- leak fluid with preferential flow direction

The lantern ring is intended for arrangement between sets (24A,C and 24B) of superimposed packing rings in a stuffing box (22) with gland (27) used as a sealing assembly for a rotating shaft (21). It has external flanges (4 is one) at both ends which fit inside the packing chamber and define an annular space (37) between them. The inner diameter has a V-contour (7,8) annular groove separated by a central inner flange from an inner annular space (39) around the shaft. Inclined bores (16, 18) extend in radial direction from the chamber (37) to the groove (7,8) and to the space (39) respectively and a connection (36) is provided to admit fluid to the chamber (37).
