The invention relates to a method for final storage of radioactive material in rock caverns. The rock cavern is provided with a closed construction 4 completely separated from the walls, roof and floor of the rock cavern and made of durable material which is impermeable to water, in which construction the material is stored enclosed in capsules. According to the invention, the space between the walls, roof and floor of the rock cavern and the construction is completely filled with water-permeable material 5 and the encapsulated material is placed on both sides of an access passage inside the construction, and when the construction is completely or partially filled with material, the construction containing the material or the part of this is poured full of bentonite or the like, leaving a passage 13 in the construction to allow handling of the material. The passage is filled up with water repellent material that is easy to excavate and when the construction has been completely filled, this construction is sealed and a lift tunnel 3 connecting the construction with ground level is filled, at least downwards to the construction and upwards to ground level.
