Fumes derived from combustion processes and contg. harmful gases have the dust removed in a standard unit, are cooled to an intermediate temp. and then taken over a heat exchanger producing temps. low enough to condense the harmful gases. The remaining portion of the fumes is further cooled by expansion and taken in reverse flow over the heat exchanger to cool the exchanger and be returned to the intermediate temp. The exchanger is formed as a regenerator which at intervals is cooled by a working gas itself in the process being heated to approx. the fume temp. The working gas may be the air being preheated for the combustion appts. The intermediate temp. may allow the entire water content of the fumes to remain in them as steam. For furnaces, cement kilns, etc. The regenerator is simple, cheap and effective in recovering heat from the fumes for immediate use. The conventional air preheater in steam boilers may be completely omitted. The regenerator may also supply sufficient heat to pre-heat the feed water for a boiler. |
