A metal strip (I), made esp. of steel, is preheated in a furnace, and is then fed round at least one guide roll which is partly immersed in a molten bath (II) of a metal or alloy, esp. molten Zn, so the strip (I) is only coated with metal (II) on its underside. The roll has a convex profile so the strip (I) assumes a trough-shaped profile while travelling through the bath (II). The coating plant pref. uses two convex guide rolls sepd. by a gas deflector baffle; and gas is blown across the upper surface of the moving strip to keep metal (II) off the upper surface of the strip. A relatively thick coating (II) can be obtd., which has a similar thickness to that obtd. when a strip is coated on both sides and the height of the bath (II) can be accurately adjusted.
|
