Electrically or optically detectable elements are provided as desired at predetermined first to fifth display positions on a photographic film magazine. The detectable elements provided in the first to fifth display positions represent multipliers of 2x, 4x, 16x, 2<1/3>x and 2<2/3>x. The speed of the film contained in the magazine is given by multiplying a predetermined standard speed value by the multiplier or multipliers which are represented by the elements present. If the speed of the film contained in the magazine is the same as the standard value, no detectable elements are provided at any of the positions. Speed sensing elements on a camera can either be capable of detecting the detectable elements at all first to fifth positions, or be capable of detecting the detectable elements only at the first to third position. In the latter case, the exposure is controlled on the basis of a speed one or two steps lower than the exact speed of the film contained in the magazine.
