Whitening of textiles of synthetic fibres and their mixts. with cellulose is carried out with a coacervate system contg. whitener (I). Treatment takes place below the Tg of the synthetic fibres with a liquid contg. a cpd. (II) of the formula R-Z-(A-O)n-Z as coacervate-forming additive (in which R is a 3-30C hydrophobic gp. A is an alkylene gp. with min. 2C. X is O or N. Z is H or a hydrophilic gp. n=1-5, pref. 1-3). (I) is a disperse whitener or an anionic whitener contg. sulpho gps. The soln can also contain an emulsifier, thickener, nuancing dyestuff and/or inorganic white pigment or matting agent. The process is useful for treating woven, knitted and nonwoven fabrics or aromatic polyesters, acrylic polymers and polyamides. It is suitable for curtains and other textiles damaged by high temp. treatment. |
