Measuring calorific energy expended in pedal drive - deriving deformation of pedal arm and using summation of measurements obtained during each rotation

A method and arrangement for measuring the energy consumed by a piece of equipment with a foot pedal drive enables the user to be informed simply and directly of energy expended or calories consumed throughout the period of use. The energy expended per revolution of the pedal drive is measured. The measured energy values are summed during the period of use and the total displayed, pref. in calories. The energy value is only measured at the position of the pedal drive at which the largest torque acts in the forward direction of the drive. The energy values are obtained by measuring the deformation of an arm (10) of the pedal drive which is proportional to the pedalling force. The total value displays can be manually cleared.
