A continuous cigarette filter string(1) is conveyed through a contol head(4) and cut(5) into sections(6). The sections are fed by a helically grooved guide wheel(8) onto a driven pick-up drum. This has grooves(10) accepting the sections. The grooves have a shoulder(17) at one end acting as a stop. The sections are prevented from falling out by a cylindrical overlying guide(13) between the wheel and a discharge conveyor. If the control head detects a fault, an accurate air jet(18), adjacent the stop, ejects the sections into a funnel(19).
