An incremental encoder comprises a rotating disk 64 having at least one reading track 27 having an alternating series of sections with differing properties. The embodiments have opaque sections separated by transparent sections. At least two pickups C1, C2 (each including an emitter 68 and a receiver 69) are placed at right angles to the track 27 (separated by an odd number of half sections) so that their changes of state during rotation of the disk 21' occur in quadrature. An electronic circuit emits a countup or countdown signal for each rising or falling transition to a counter. Further pickups in bores 72, 73 are sensitive to axial shifting of shaft 49 which can slide through a central bore of disc 64 and can act on the electronic circuit to divert the data from pickups C1, C2 to other devices. <IMAGE> |
