Diphenyl ether(I; R1 = phenyl substituted C1-6 alkyl; R2 = nitro; R3 = H, F, Cl, Br, I, C1-6 alkyl, trifluoro methyl, cyano; R4 = H, halogen atom, trifluoromethyl; R5 = halogen atom, trifluoromethyl; R6 = H, C1-4 alkyl), useful as herbicide, were prepd. by reacting compd. (II) with nitrating agent. Thus, 5-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-2-nitro benzoic acid 1.58 g and thionyl chloride 20 ml was refluxed for 90 min, excess thionylchloride was elminiated under the reduced pressure, methanesulfoneamide 0.45 g was added, stirred for one night, and then extracted with ether to give 5-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-2-nitro-N- methanesulfonyl benzoamide (m.p. 201≦̸C).
