PURPOSE:To quantitatively display temp. with high decorativeness by making use of the fact that the boundary between regions of a cholesteric liq. crystal in a horizontally oriented wedge-shaped cell where the liq. crystal has different twist angles transfers in accordance with a temp. change. CONSTITUTION:Glass supports 4, 5 are set so that the space (d) is changed uniformly in the X direction, and the surfaces are arranged parallel as shown by 6, 7. When the thickness d1 of the resulting wedge-shaped cell at the thickest side is made twice as large as the pitch of a cholesteric liq. crystal at 20 deg.C, from the relation between twisting force peculiar to the liq. crystal and the orientation regulating force of orienting films on the surfaces of the supports, at the temp. a nematic strcutre 13 with twist angle phi=0 and a grandjean structure 15 with twist angle phi=180 deg. are formed at the thinner side 12 and the thicker side 14, respectively separated at a point where the cell thickness is 1/4 pitch as a boundary line. The rotation of polarized light is not caused in the nematic section, and optical rotatory dispersion is caused in the grandjean section, so the transfer of the boundary due to a temp. change can be displayed visibly. |
