Accumulations of oil on water can be collected by pulling a surface vessel 10 of barge type through the water. The vessel has a backward sloping stem 16 and an inlet opening 18 for oil at the stem under the waterline. One or more preferably backward-directed fins 19 are placed on the stem in proximity to the waterline 14 and the inlet opening. The sloping of the stem, intensified by the action of the fins, forces the oil downward in front of the vehicle so that it slides as a layer along the bottom of the vessel, possibly mixed with water. When the oil reaches the inlet opening, it is forced into the interior of the vessel by reason of the pressure difference between the outside and inside of the vessel. The oil collected in the vessel is pumped out occasionally or continuously, while the water is separated and forced out through holes in the vessel's bottom 12. <IMAGE> |
