<p>In reducing particulate iron oxide to molten iron utilizing solid carbonaceous fuel as reductant in a shaft type reducing furnace, a furnace burden is formed of a mixture of iron oxide lumps or pellets and particulate solid fuel. An electric current is passed through the burden between electrodes 30 and 37 to heat the furnace electrothermally. Reacted top gas from the furnace is cooled and cleaned in scrubbers 50 and 60 and after reheating is recirculated via inlets (78) through the burden in counter-flow relationship thereby heating, reducing and melting the burden. Molten iron product and slag is removed from outlets (24) (26) at the bottom of the furnace. <IMAGE></p> |
