PURPOSE:To discriminate between type characters and handwritten characters in a character area of each character line or plural character lines on the basis of the extent of variance in the array pitch of the character area in a character- line direction, by finding the array pitch in the said direction. CONSTITUTION:An arithmetic circuit 9 finds array pitch as to the entire character area of one character line to calculate the average mup and reference deviation sigmap of the array pitch, and then to calculate a value sigmap/mup, which is outputted to a discriminating circuit 10. The discriminating circuit 10 compares the value sigmap/mup with a threshold value T and, when the value is greater than the T (when the variance in array pitch exceeds some extent), judges that a character in each character area of the character line is handwritten, thereby outputting a 1 to a discrimination output line 12. When not (when the variance in array pitch is less than said extent), the discriminating circuit 10 output a 0. |
