Apparatus for washing butter comprises a washing drum 2 coaxial with and rotating in opposite direction to the separating drum 1 and having agitators 3 carried on supports 4, and a peripheral screen portion 11 at the discharge end. Buttermilk passes out of the holes 18 in the drum 1 and the butter corn falls on to a stationary washing plate 5 where it is washed with water from a spray 14. The butter corn is raised a certain distance up the washing plate by the agitator fingers 3, and then falls back. Blades 15 arranged on the agitator supports 4 at an angle to the drum axis move the butter corn across the washing plate until it falls on the screen portion 11 of the drum 2 where the washing water drains off, and over the lip 12 into a kneader (not depicted). The drum 2 is detachably mounted on rollers 6 and is driven by the drum 1 through an idler pinion 9.</p> |
