<p>The machine comprises a pressure vessel in which the prod. is contacted with live steam under pressure, and which has a drainage system for condensate etc. In the vessel, the prod. is contained and treated in a power-rotated, horizontal cylindrical basket, a clear space being retained all round between basket and vessel wall. The basket perforations follow a regular pattern so that steam, injected into the clear space, is distributed uniformly into all parts of the basket. The interior of the basket has a number of projecting paddles which lift and tumble the prod. as the basket rotates. Pref. the cylindrical basket is coaxially disposed within a horizontal, cylindrical vessel. Both basket and vessel may be rotated together or the basket may be rotated independently within a stationary vessel. The basket and vessel can be mounted on a horizontal pivot at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the basket. The basket can then be emptied by tilting. Injected steam is distributed uniformly through the tumbled prod. All the prod. becomes softened to about the same depth in the same time. This results in shorter peeling time and higher yield of prod. Previously, some prod. became over-steamed to the point of disintegration before other prod. had softened to peeling depth.</p> |
