A process for separating a gas mixture by adsorption is described, in which adsorption and desorption steps are carried out repeatedly and in mutually offset cycles in a plurality of adsorption columns, and which is characterised in that, to initiate a desorption step, a gas mixture supplied by or discharged from an adsorption column, in which the adsorption has been completed during a primary (first) pressure-lowering period, is transferred to another adsorption column, whose pressure has, after completion of the desorption step, been increased by means of a non-adsorbed gas constituent, supplied as a result of the low-pressure adsorption, and/or a gas mixture, supplied or discharged during the primary pressure-lowering period, to a value between the adsorption pressure and desorption pressure, in order to carry out a low-pressure adsorption step, during which the adsorbable gas constituent of the gas mixture is adsorbed, while a pressurised gas mixture, supplied during the primary pressure-lowering period, of low concentration of adsorbable gas constituent can be effectively used. The invention also relates to equipment for carrying out this process.
