The method is for printing a running material strip (1) in accordance with a pattern, and uses a printing roller (3) operable between active and inactive positions. The roller (3), on receipt of a signal from a guide unit (17) reading the strip pattern, is moved to its active position, locating against the running strip (1). This causes the roller (3) to turn to its pattern point on the strip, and then to be moved back to its inactive position. - When the printing roller moves back under the effect of spring units, it does so to a fixed rest position. The guide unit (17) is a photo-cell activated by the strip (1) pattern, and the printing roller has a colour applied to it by a carrier roller (4) both during work and return rotations.
