An incontinence pad has a permeable membrane (8) covering an absorbent filling. The membrane is perforated in such a way that it has a one-way property, allowing liquid easy access to the filling, but severely restricting reverse flow. The membrane, of plastics sheet (1), is laid on an apertured base and punctured by blunt angled blades (4), which stretch the plastics material into the apertures (3) before penetrating.
